AAO 2019: Inspire!

The theme of this year’s American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting was “Inspire” and we certainly left San Francisco feeling inspired. It was an amazing weekend. S+S{i} executed an important meeting that gathered the nation’s top glaucoma surgeons. These physicians are fiercely committed to giving their patients access to the best treatments and procedures. Even though they perform countless surgeries and are no doubt experts, they are lifelong learners interested in refining their craft by collaborating about their experiences with their peers. In our meeting and throughout the sessions we attended at AAO, experienced surgeons were constantly thinking about novice surgeons being able to successfully adopt new tools and resources, which translates into the best possible care for patients.

On the other end of the spectrum, there were many young physicians and researchers at the AAO annual meeting presenting their data on myriad topics. There was a commitment across the board to asking and testing important questions that have real implications in clinical practice. In glaucoma, we are reminded of the treatment landscape in type 2 diabetes. There are many treatment options with a lack of consensus on the various approaches. Although a bounty of available therapies may seem great, it often leads to clinical inertia or delayed decision making that can setback patient care. This underlies the importance of medical communications to provide clarity and allow larger audiences access to experts’ experiences and opinions.

We were thrilled to be a part of the important evidence that was shared and the education that was imparted at the 2019 AAO annual meeting. Truly inspiring!
